Königstein in Saxony
A big plus for our town is that it is easily accessible by public transportation. Königstein is reachable by every means of transport (except airplanes!). From here, you can travel by foot or by bike, by auto or by bus, by the train or by a ship, to the nearby mesas and valleys and to the outlying regions of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
The "Festungsexpress" (an express bus to the fortress) and the old-fashioned double-decker bus ("Basteikraxler") leave from the town square ("Reißigerplatz"). It only takes 40 minutes with the S-bahn to arrive in the capitol of Saxony, Dresden. You can also get to Dresden by bike along the Elbe cycle path in about 3 hours.
Right next to the world-famous fortress are the Lilienstein mesa, with its awe-inspiring view; Pfaffenstein, known for its 43 m tall rock spire named "Barbarine" and its large sandstone plateau; and the Quirl with the "Thief's Cellar" (the biggest cave in Saxon Switzerland), all within less than three hours from Königstein. On both Pfaffenstein and Lilienstein, hikers can enjoy a mountain restaurant, in case the climb has made them hungry.
In the Königstein district Leupoldishain, you can find an interesting and confusing sandstone maze, so there is more to do than just enjoying the extensive hiking. Whoever loves comfortable, relaxing trips will find Königstein to be the perfect place. On the Elbe in the valley, you can take quiet, interesting, and relaxing walks. There are two bicycle rentals, so you can leave your trusty old bike at home.
Most pensions also loan out bicycles as part of their service. The well-built paths in the vicinity make cycling pleasurable. Königstein is a perfect starting point for enjoying the panorama of Saxon Switzerland by riding along the Elbe cycle path, regardless of whether you are riding up the Elbe toward the Czech Republic or downriver toward Dresden. There are also rides for those who desire something more athletic on the innumerable paths along the roads or in the woods. The staff at our Tourist Information Office in "Haus des Gastes" will help you find the best possible cycle route suited to your desires.
Worth seeing in Königstein is the domed church, the post mileage column from 1727 and the many other memorials which honor our great cultural tradition as well as our rich musical history. The food in Königstein is also quite good.
In every restaurant, inn, hotel and pension, you will experience and enjoy the well-known Saxon friendliness.
We look forward to a visit from you in beautiful Königstein.
